The presentation will provide insight into addressing health disparities and navigating the barriers often faced when working with LGBTQIA+ individuals. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the unique challenges this population experiences in accessing equitable healthcare and the systemic factors that contribute to these disparities. The session will also offer practical strategies for healthcare providers to create more inclusive, affirming environments and improve engagement, trust, and outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
-Identify 2–3 specific hurdles that LGBTQIA+ individuals commonly face when seeking medical or mental health care
-Explain at least one contributing factor to health disparities within the LGBTQIA+ community, including how intersecting identities (such as race, disability, or neurodivergence) can compound barriers to care
-List 2–3 practical changes that counseling agencies, medical facilities, or private practices can implement in paperwork, intake processes, and treatment approaches to reduce barriers for LGBTQIA+ clients
-Describe 2–3 advocacy strategies that healthcare professionals can use to support LGBTQIA+ clients in accessing affirming and comprehensive care across medical and mental health settings
