This is a unique session that is based on an interview of a client conducted by her counselor regarding
the abuse she suffered at the hands of her therapist. The client’s goal for sharing her personal
experience is education, helping counselors understand the impact that abuse has on clients. The
session also focuses on ethical issues including multiple relationships and boundaries. Finally, the
session covers legal aspects that relate to therapist abuse.
Workshop Objectives
- Develop a unique prospective on therapist abuse by hearing directly from a client who suffered at the hands of her therapist.
- Review ethical issues related to multiple relationships and boundaries.
- Understand the legal implications for therapist abuse in Tennessee.
About the Speakers
Paula Wiemers, MS, LPC/MHSP
Paula Wiemers, MS, LPC/MHSP graduated from Tennessee State University with a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology in 2002. She worked for Mental Health Cooperative on the Davidson County Crisis Team from 2002-2005. Paula began as a fulltime counselor and later transitioned to an independent contractor with AGAPE Counseling from 2005 to the present. She has been an Approved Supervisor since 2010. Paula enjoys working with individual adults and uses a goal-oriented and collaborative style in her practice. She works with clients who are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, relational problems, abuse issues, PTSD, and adjustment or phase of life problems. Paula volunteered with a local domestic violence support group from 1998-2005. She is knowledgeable about the many forms of power and control that clients experience from others. Her goals for victims are freedom and empowerment.
Dr. Robin Wilbourn Lee
Dr. Robin Wilbourn Lee is a Professor in the Professional Counseling Program of the Womack Educational Leadership Department at Middle Tennessee State University, specializing in mental health counseling. Dr. Lee is currently serving as the Program Coordinator and the Director of the MTSU Center for Counseling and Psychological Services, a training clinic affiliated with the Professional Counseling Program.
Dr. Lee earned a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Mississippi State University, a M.Ed. in Community Counseling and a BA in Psychology from Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. Dr. Lee is a Licensed Professional Counselor with Mental Health Service Provider status in Tennessee, a National Certified Counselor, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor. She is currently serving as the Executive Director for TLPCA.
Dr. George Davis
Dr. George Davis is a graduate of University of South Florida (Magna Cum Laude) in 1977. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rosemead Graduate School of Psychology in California in 1986 and his J.D. from Nashville School of Law 1999.
Dr. Davis has a private practice in Clinical Psychology, focusing on custody evaluations and divorce issues. He serves as an expert witness in disability cases. Dr. Davis teaches Law and Ethics to graduate students at Vanderbilt's Human Development and Counseling program (2001 to present) and has a law practice in Williamson and Davidson Counties. He serves as the legislative liaison and Federal Advocacy Coordinator for the Tennessee Psychological Association.
