The presentation addresses addictions as it relates to adolescents in Tennessee. Certain standard treatments are not appropriate for adolescents. Further, the matter is complicated when addictive behaviors are passed from generation to generation. The presentation includes certain incongruencies, adolescent peculiarities as they relate to treatment and understanding, and evidenced-based treatment approaches found to be successful in treatment. While some physiological aspects of addiction are covered, special emphasis on influence and environment are explored.
Objectives:
- Following the presentation, participants will be able to identify differences in treating addiction in adults and adolescents.
- Following the presentation, participates will be able to understand basic effects addiction can have on the brain and environmental factors of addiction.
- Following the presentation, participants will be able to utilize evidenced-based treatment modalities for adolescents struggling with addiction.

Speaker Bio
Jeremy M. Northrop, Ph.D. has advanced counseling degrees. Since 2010, Dr. Northrop has worked in residential treatment of addictions among adolescent males. Dr. Northrop directs Tennessee Children’s Home – West and provides group addictions counseling. Starting August 2021, Dr. Northrop will serve as an assistant professor at Freed-Hardman University.
