The counseling literature suggests there are many benefits to counselors and counseling students receiving personal counseling. Further, the majority of those who do so report being satisfied with the experience. This presentation will explore the potential benefits of counselors and counseling students receiving personal counseling, including as a form of self-care and protective factor against burnout. Obstacles to engaging personal counseling will also be presented and solutions to overcome these will be discussed.

Objectives:

  • Following this presentation, participants will be able to identify the potential benefits of engaging in personal counseling for themselves and/or for the counseling students they educate or supervise.
  • Following this presentation, participants will understand a variety of obstacles related to counselors and students receiving personal counseling and will have brainstormed ways to navigate these challenges.
  • Following this presentation, participants will be able to recognize the effects and progression of burnout and will have evaluated the role of personal counseling in its prevention and overall self-care benefits.

About the Speakers

Brad Imhoff, PhD, LPC

Speaker Bio

Dr. Brad Imhoff is the Director of the Addiction Counseling program and an Assistant Professor in the CMHC program at Liberty University. He earned a Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision from Ohio University and has presented many times at local, regional, and national conferences on a variety of topics.

Robert Switala

Speaker Bio

Robert Switala is a master’s-level student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Liberty University, where he is also co-host of the “RENAR Voice” podcast for Chi Sigma Iota’s Rho Eta Nu Alpha Rho chapter.

Jeff Mazzone
