When utilizing family counseling in families with young children, many times the youngest members of the family may struggle to engage. Additionally, play and experiential activities offer unique and insightful ways to explore family dynamics and functioning, and provide a connection between the abstract and concrete. In this experiential session, participants will learn ways to integrate play-based techniques into their work with families and explore specific play-based interventions that support family counseling goals.
Objectives:
- Following this presentation, participants will be able to describe a rationale for including play in family counseling.
- Following this presentation, participants will be able to identify at least 3 specific play-based interventions that can be used in a family counseling session.
- Following this presentation, participants will be able to discuss how play-based techniques fit within the counseling process.

Speaker Bio
Kim Coggins, PhD is an Associate Professor at Austin Peay State University where she specializes in child centered play therapy, expressive arts in counseling, and engaging caregivers in the counseling process. She has assisted with and led counseling groups specific for teachers, parents, and caregivers.
