Directions

This will be a brief discussion will highlight current trends in youth and adolescent mental health including common diagnoses and presenting problems, commonality among school-aged children, and competing diagnostic criteria. In addition, we will discuss the necessity of agency-school interaction as best practice and suggest approaches for engagement as a treatment partner.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify at least 3 umbrella categories of diagnoses commonly impacting adolescents.
  • Participants will be able to discuss the commonality of diagnosable mental health disorders in school aged children and adolescents.
  • Participations will be able to identify one strategy for engaging the school as a treatment partner.

About the Speaker(s)

 Colleen Weems, Ed.D., LPC-MHSP-S

Dr. Colleen Weems holds a Bachelor of Science (2000, Applied Human Sciences), Master of Arts (2005, Counseling) and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (2021) from East Tennessee State University. Weems has served as an adjunct faculty member in Milligan’s MSC program for the past five years. Her additional experience includes outpatient mental health counseling, mobile crisis response services, school-based therapy, school counseling, educational consultation, and learning leadership. Weems holds clinical licensure in counseling as well as educational licensure in school counseling and instructional leadership.

Weems is a member of the American School Counselor Association and the Tennessee School Counselor Association where she serves on the Professional Development Committee; she is a past-president of the Watauga Counseling Association. She has made numerous presentations at both state and national conferences, and has provided in-service trainings for local school systems and private businesses and organizations. Dr. Weems and her husband Ken are the proud parents of Tradd and Quinn.
