Several new laws affecting all mental health professionals were signed into law in 2024. This session provides an overview of these legislative changes, focusing on duty to warn, suicidal ideation, consent, confidentiality, record-keeping, and issues involving minors and parents. Attendees will learn how to apply these updates in clinical practice and will gain tools to stay current with legal requirements and advocacy efforts. A practical decision tree will be introduced to guide professionals through complex scenarios, ensuring ethical and compliant patient care.

Objectives:

  • Examine four (4) new laws affecting duty to warn, suicidal ideation, consent, confidentiality, records, minors, and parents.

  • Practice integrating the new statutory requirements into real-world scenarios and enhance compliance in daily mental health practice.

  • Obtain resources and strategies to remain informed about ongoing legislative changes and to effectively advocate for professional needs.

  • Understand and utilize a structured decision-making tool to navigate ethical and legal considerations in mental health treatment.
