This training equips clinicians to recognize, reflect upon, and ethically manage countertransference in their practice. By applying the ACA Code of Ethics and understanding its significance in both individual and broader treatment contexts, counselors will be better prepared to provide professional, compassionate, and ethically sound care to their clients. The ultimate goal is to enhance the therapeutic relationship, ensure client safety, and uphold standards of professional conduct.

Objectives:

  • Discussion of ACA Code of Ethics (2014) I.1.b. “Ethical Decision Making”
  • Exploration of how countertransference can manifest as both positive (e.g., over-identification with a client) and negative (e.g., frustration or resentment)
  • A look at the impact of countertransference in different treatment settings
