Directions
Mental health counselors transition from highly intense and structured supervision structure in graduate school, to a post-graduate season where weekly individual supervision is a minimum, and ultimately to a fully-licensed experience that is fully autonomous and possibly lacks either peer or supervisory feedback. How do we know if we what we are doing is working? Would we, or anyone else, notice if we exhibited signs of compassion fatigue or burnout? This workshop will review research and additional resources as we seek to maintain a commitment to continual growth and excellence as health care providers.
Objectives:
- Review research and additional sources, including the ACA Code of Ethics, regarding counselor competence
- Identify and be able to differentiate between key threats to professional practice: compassion fatigue, burnout, and vicarious trauma
- Identify strategies for continual skill development and growth as professional counselors
About the Speaker(s)
Dr. Sean Ridge, LMFT, ACS, BC-TMH Provider
I have been a counselor for over 25 years, establishing an independent private practice and providing clinical therapy and supervision as well as consultation in the areas of leadership and community dynamics. I have previously co-found a nonprofit organization (the Texas Family Institute in Abilene, TX), and have recently co-founded and am now co-directing a new nonprofit in East Tennessee named SoulBridge. The mission of SoulBridge is to increase access to healthcare in rural and underserved areas in East Tennessee, supporting and resourcing both therapists as well as community leaders within that mission.
I have also served as a counselor educator, teaching graduate and undergraduate university courses. Topics of particular interest include professional ethics, spirituality, human sexuality, and practical applications to the “doing of counseling” such as couples therapy and family therapy coursework.
Finally, without question, my passion is my family where I spend the majority of my time and energy. My personal interests include outdoor activities such as camping and running, riding my motorcycle, woodworking, and watching sporting events.
