Addressing suicide in session can be anxiety provoking for new and seasoned clinicians alike. Asking the “right” questions, planning for safety, and determining whether or not to hospitalize are all processes that are essential to treating suicide. Yet, the client’s story is often lost for the sake of risk management, which is antithetical to trauma-informed care.

During this workshop, participants will explore best practices for suicide assessment and treatment while promoting safety, cultural humility, and the therapeutic alliance. Participants will gain practical resources for assessing and treating suicidality and, more importantly, increased compassion and empathy for the story behind the behavior.

Objectives:

  • Increase understanding of theories of why people die by suicide.
  • Develop a working definition of trauma-informed care and its application to treating suicidality.
  • Identify and implement evidence-based treatments for suicidal ideation and behavior.
