Perinatal mental health concerns are among the most common complications of pregnancy and the postpartum period, yet they remain significantly under-recognized and under-treated. This interactive lecture training, It’s Not Just the Baby Blues, challenges the widespread minimization of maternal emotional distress and highlights the critical need for a deeper, trauma-informed understanding of perinatal mental health.

Participants will explore the spectrum of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), moving beyond the colloquial “baby blues” to examine more complex and impactful clinical presentations. The training emphasizes how traumatic stressors intersect with the perinatal experience, influencing risk, symptom expression, and barriers to care. By the end of this training, participants will be better equipped to recognize the realities of perinatal mental health, advocate for more inclusive and responsive care, and support families with greater confidence.

This is a live, in-person training happening on 7/31/26 from 9a-12:15pm.

The presenter will utilize lectures, discussions, and exercises to support the learning objectives and facilitate learning.

Learning Objectives:

Identify a spectrum of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), including key diagnostic features that differentiate them from typical “baby blues.”

Understand the role that mental health history, trauma and other toxic stressors plays in the development and presentation of perinatal mental health concerns.

Apply trauma-informed counseling principles to the assessment and treatment of clients in the perinatal period.

Recognize systemic, cultural, and societal barriers that contribute to the under-diagnosis and under treatment of maternal mental health concerns.
