Translational Neuroscience is the science of exploring the neurobiological correlates of human phenomena. It can also be used to understand the effects of counseling interventions, like mindfulness. This presentation will describe the systems underlying mindfulness practices in counseling and then demonstrate mindfulness practices described in the counseling and neuroscience literature. Participants will be invited to discuss the clinical value in understanding the neuroscience of mindfulness in their work with clients.
Workshop Objectives
- Following this presentation, participants will be able to identify the brain structures and systems related to mindfulness-based practices.
- Following this presentation, participants will be able to engage in mindfulness-based activities used in counseling.
- Following this presentation, participants will be able to describe the value of neurobiological explanations underlying mindfulness-based practices in counseling.
About the Speakers
Chad Luke
Chad Luke PhD, LPC-MHSP, NCC, ACS is a counselor educator at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN and a clinical supervisor. He is the author of Neuroscience for Counselors and Therapists (2nd Ed.) as well as numerous peer-reviewed empirical and conceptual articles on the integration of neuroscience with counseling.
Logan Shock
Logan Shock is a Master’s student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tennessee. She has worked with college students in campus ministry leadership development and student growth since 2011 and holds a RYT 200 certification in yoga and mindfulness instruction.
