This presentation will provide an introduction to Child-Centered Play Therapy, an effective treatment modality for young children. The presenter will provide essential knowledge regarding the developmental needs of young children. The presenter will discuss the nature of the play therapy relationship, including the role of the play therapist in forming the relationship and stages within the relationship. The presentation will include discussion of basic play therapy skills such as structuring, tracking, reflection of content and process, returning responsibility, facilitating self-advocacy, and limit setting. Attendees will have an opportunity to practice these play therapy skills. Finally, the presenter will discuss developmentally appropriate play therapy toys and materials that can be incorporated into either a permanent or traveling playroom for the purposes of both assessment and treatment.

Objectives:

  • Understand the therapeutic needs of young children.

  • Understand the client-centered theoretical model of play therapy, including the nature of the play therapy relationship, basic play therapy skills, and necessary materials.

  • Have had a chance to practice play therapy skills.

About the Speaker(s)

Carolyn Carlisle, PhD, LPC

Dr. Carolyn Carlisle is a counselor educator at Carson-Newman University who teaches in the areas of Clinical Mental Health Counseling and psychotherapy as well as Professional School Counseling. Her research interests include play therapy, disrupted attachment, and preventing attachment disorders. She has extensive clinical experience with children, teens, adults, and families and holds national certifications in forensic counseling, domestic violence counseling, cognitive behavioral, and human trafficking counseling. Her hobbies include martial arts, horseback riding, reading, travel and spending time with her 12 amazing grandchildren (and their parents too, of course)!
