Trauma-informed care has transformed how mental health professionals recognize and respond to the experiences of the people they serve. Yet many clinicians and healthcare professionals continue to experience significant demands on their own emotional, mental, relational, and physical capacity.
This interactive, three-hour educational symposium examines the relationship between traumatic stress, professional capacity, and trauma-responsive care. Drawing from contemporary research, clinical experience, and practical case applications, trauma and attachment specialist and capacity strategist Valarie Thornton will explore how professionals can move beyond trauma awareness toward more intentional, sustainable approaches to clinical practice and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Participants will examine the effects of traumatic stress and occupational strain, explore a capacity-informed approach to recognizing overload and identifying supports, and practice strategies that promote safety, professional effectiveness, and collaborative care.
Through clinical scenarios, guided reflection, and applied learning activities, attendees will leave with practical tools they can adapt to their respective roles and settings.
Objectives:
- Identify at least three ways traumatic stress and chronic occupational stress can influence emotional regulation, relational functioning, and professional decision-making.
- Apply a capacity-informed framework to a clinical or interdisciplinary case to identify signs of overload, available supports, and appropriate trauma-responsive interventions.
- Develop an individualized action plan incorporating at least three practical strategies to support client safety, professional capacity, and sustainable interdisciplinary collaboration.
