Suicidal thoughts and behavior use to be reserved for only the most severe cases of mental health disorders. That is not the case anymore. As clinicians we are noticing suicidal ideation creep into the general population. Learning to distinguish between suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior can give the clinician and the clients tools to more forward with these often very scary symptoms. Dialectical Behavior Therapy has a robust history of addressing suicidal gestures in clients with borderline personality disorder. DBT skills can be used to address symptoms of suicidal ideation presented by other diagnosis including depression and anxiety related disorders.

Objectives:

  • Distinguish between suicidal behavior and suicidal ideation
  • Review diagnosis that include suicidal ideation
  • Explore DBT interventions to address suicidal ideation
