In working with LGBTQ+ clients, it is important to understand common terms, definitions, and concepts around sexual identity. This presentation will focus on current research that suggests sexual identity can be effectively conceptualized as a multi-variable or multiple continua model. Understanding these variables can help clinicians to increase competency in working with LGBTQ+ clients, strengthen the therapeutic alliance, and aid in addressing and working through issues specific to this population.
Workshop Objectives
- Following this presentation, participants will be able to understand and define common terminology and concepts relating to LGBTQ+ clients.
- Following this presentation, participants will be able to understand the multiple continua model of sexual identity.
- Following this presentation, participants will be able to utilize concepts from the multiple continua model of sexual identity when working with LGBTQ+ clients.
About the Speaker
Catherine Tourangeau
Dr. Tourangeau is the Clinical Director at Allied Behavioral Health Solutions in Nashville. She is a member of TLPCA and ACA holding LPC-MHSP and NCC credentials. She previously worked in community mental health in New York City and currently specialize in LGBTQ+ issues including couples counseling.
