This course provides participants with practical skills to recognize and respond to suicide risk, incorporate mindfulness techniques to support calm and compassionate interactions, and apply effective documentation strategies that promote clear communication, continuity of care, and risk management. Participants will have a better understanding of suicide risk and prevention.

Objectives:

  • Recognize common warning signs, risk factors, and protective factors associated with suicide risk.
  • Apply evidence-informed suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention strategies.
  • Demonstrate mindfulness-based techniques that promote emotional regulation, present-moment awareness, and a calm, supportive response during conversations involving suicide risk.
  • Develop an appropriate safety-focused response, including identifying immediate concerns, strengthening protective factors, and connecting individuals with appropriate resources.
  • Document suicide risk assessments, interventions, clinical decisions, safety planning, referrals, and follow-up in a clear, objective, timely, and legally/ethically appropriate manner.

Kim Freeman, LPC-MHSP- S

With 20 years of counseling experience, I am a dedicated clinical
supervisor who specializes in helping individuals aged 18 and up navigate
the complexities of traumatic life events, depression, anxiety, and
addiction. I employ an array of counseling methods, including Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, motivational
interviewing, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
(EMDR), to provide tailored support for each client. I am passionate about
offering compassionate care to a diverse range of individuals, firmly
believing that everyone deserves a happy and fulfilling life. I received a
Masters of Science in Community Counseling from Austin Peay State
University in 2005, obtained licensure as an LPC-MHSP in Tennessee in
2009, and acquired Approved Supervisor designation in 2014. I am
currently enjoying my role as a Clinical Supervisor at Ellie Mental Health in
Smyrna, TN.
