Counselors will learn how to effectively address anxiety and depression, and birth trauma challenges in perinatal and postnatal clients as they make postpartum adjustments. Counselors will obtain solid clinical interventions from intake questions to utilization of evidenced based assessment tools. Scope of practice and referral to specialized care are included in discussion.

Objectives:

  • Identify the prevalence and risk factors of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and birth trauma.
  • Differentiate between normal postpartum adjustment and clinical symptom presentations.
  • Incorporate effective intake questions and validated assessment tools into counseling sessions.
  • Evaluate when to provide in-scope counseling support and when to refer clients to specialized care.
