Incidents of power-based violence have reached epidemic proportions on college campuses in the United States. This workshop is designed to assist mental health practitioners to define sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking and to help college aged clients to identify their experiences. Up to date statistics on and definitions of campus power-based violence are discussed as well as rape culture, victim blaming, and trauma. An overview is given of both the criminal and college Title IX reporting processes as well as what the role of a mental health professional is when one of their client’s is navigating healing and/or going through the reporting process.
Workshop Objectives
- Learn about the prevalence of power-based violence on college campuses.
- Learn the differences between the criminal and Title IX reporting processes for sexual assault, domestic and dating violence, and stalking.
- What is the role of mental health professionals throughout a client’s reporting process?

Erin Murray is a graduate student at the University of Tennessee Knoxville in pursuit of her MSSW. She currently serves as the Assistant Project Coordinator of Tennessee Technological University’s Project AWAKEN, a grant funded program that provides awareness, education and advocacy services related to sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.
