This interactive three-hour workshop equips counselors and other mental health professionals to recognize and respond to three related threats to professional well-being: absorption vulnerability, compassion fatigue, and burnout. Participants will distinguish the internalization of client material from the cumulative cost of caring and from organizational or workload-related depletion. Through brief teaching, guided self-assessment, de-identified clinical application, somatic awareness, experiential exercises, and reflective supervision planning, participants will identify personal and relational risk pathways, recognize early signs of saturation, and practice strategies for regulation, emotional differentiation, trauma metabolism, boundaries, consultation, and recovery. The workshop frames clinician vulnerability as an ethical self-monitoring concern rather than a personal failure and concludes with an individualized resilience plan. Participation is invitational, paced, and designed to support psychological safety; the training is educational and is not a substitute for personal therapy.
Objectives:
- Differentiate absorption vulnerability, compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout by identifying the primary mechanism, common risk factors, and hallmark indicators of each.
- Identify at least three personal, relational, or organizational factors that increase vulnerability and at least three early warning signs across somatic, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and clinical domains.
- Develop and demonstrate an individualized resilience plan that includes at least one regulation skill, one emotional-differentiation or release practice, one boundary or workload strategy, and one reflective supervision or peer-support action.
