Impaired functioning in work life is a diagnostic characteristic of post-traumatic stress disorder, and yet the interactions between trauma and career remain understudied (Prescod. & Zeligman, 2018). This presentation seeks to help participants understand the connections between trauma and work life difficulties, to teach participants how to help their clients with trauma experience overcome the obstacles that impede professional growth, and to encourage trauma therapists and career counselors to incorporate this information into their practices.
Objectives:
- Following this presentation, participants will understand how work life is impacted by trauma including difficulties with the development of a professional identity, trouble with social functioning on-the-job, misunderstanding office politics, and experiencing chronic underemployment.
- Following this presentation, participants will understand how the neurobiology of trauma impacts and often hinders the job search process for trauma-exposed clients in areas that include interviewing, trauma re-enactment, and choosing healthy organizations and bosses for whom to work.
- Following this presentation, participants will understand how Trauma-Informed Career Development Counseling (T-ICDC) can lead to post-traumatic growth in areas including integration of self and stabilization, a sense of worth and power, and a regeneration of a belief in the future.
