Trauma work is more than working with discrete individual events in the lives of our clients. It can seep into the worldview of a person, causing them to question their experience of reality as well as their own judgement – and this is true of client as well as clinician. This workshop will review trauma work from a systemic and ecological framework, and address both the ethical and clinical implications of doing this work for counselors.

Objectives:

  • Evaluate their current strategies for engaging trauma in their professional practice.
  • Analyze how trauma can shape clients’ and clinicians’ worldviews, perceptions of reality, and judgment.
  • Identify strategies for maintaining ethical, survivor-centered, trauma-responsive counseling practices.
