This webinar was recorded during our 2020 Virtual Counseling and Therapy Summit.

The need for counselors for transgender and non-binary clients is high, and the stakes are higher. Nearly half of this population have attempted suicide – and competent and compassionate therapists can be hard to find. In this presentation, a therapist and her transgender son will share the unique challenges of the transgender experience and discuss gender identity and expression, with specifics participants can utilize immediately to support their own clients and their families.

Workshop Objectives

  1. Following this presentation, participants will be able to identify and understand the basics of transgender identity.
  2. Following this presentation, participants will be able to understand and explain the nuances between gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation.
  3. Following this presentation, participants will be able to utilize resources to support transgender clients and their families through the process of transition.

About the Speakers

Janie Wilkerson

Janie Wilkerson, LPC-MHSP, NCC works with transgender youth and their families in private practice in Nashville, specializing in trauma therapy. She is a member of the health and youth task forces for Nashville Pride and the 2020 Ethics Chair for TLPCA.

Evan Wilkerson

Evan Wilkerson is a native Nashvillian, transgender activist, and recent graduate of Smith College. He has been a leader in promoting better understanding of LGBTQ+ identity by facilitating workshops and advocating for transgender rights for nearly a decade. Evan created the volunteer training program for Nashville Launch Pad.
