In this session we will explore steps to create a unified profession with advocacy powers that promotes growth of our profession. By continuing to stay on this current pathway in counseling leadership, we will not solve problems but create challenges that will stifle creative thought and thinking. In order to make changes, we must begin to reframe how we look at the counseling profession holistically and create an identity that will expand the profession.
Objectives:
- By the end of this presentation the participants will be able to identify the various roles of a counselor.
- The participants will be able to discuss the need for a unified identity.
- The participants will understand how to explore steps to create a unified voice through advocacy.

Joy Hutchinson, NCC, CTP, NREMT-Paramedic
Speaker Bio
Joy Hutchinson, NCC, CTP, NREMT-Paramedic is a doctoral student at The University of Memphis in Tennessee. She is the Doctoral Representative for Chi Sigma Iota. Her interests are working with first responders, trauma, and substance abuse. Joy’s hope is to eradicate the stigma for counseling within the first responder professions.

Keith Hembree is a doctoral student at The University of Memphis in Tennessee. His interests include career development, advocacy, and working with adolescents. Keith’s passion is to help grow the counseling profession while bridging the gap between clinical mental health and school counselors.
