Few counselor education programs provide any training or even information on the business aspects of counseling. Yet private practice is arguably the most common vocational choice for mental health counselors. This course will address the business aspects of counseling. The presenter will provide an overview of private practice models, discuss necessary steps for starting a private practice, and review ethically-sound approaches to growing a practice into a profitable business. The course is tailored to both therapists who are planning on starting a private practice and therapists in private practice looking for ideas to make their practices more profitable. Attendees can expect to learn about different private practice models, explore steps to starting a private practice such as registering a business, selecting office space, developing a business plan, working with insurance companies, setting ethically-sound fee schedules, and advertising. Attendees will further have the opportunity to explore frequently encountered dilemmas such as solo practice/group practice, insurance pay/private pay, sliding scale/no sliding scale.

Course Learning Objectives:
Discuss different private practice models
Explore steps to starting a private practice
Consider frequently encountered dilemmas
Identify ways to grow a practice into a profitable business
