Due to advances in medical care and public health, Americans are experiencing longer – and often healthier – lifespans than ever. Because of this, death and dying has become increasingly relegated to old age.
Using videos and breakout sessions, this workshop will examine some of the difficulties associated with aging and dying and, in particular, focus on the limitations of the conventional advance care planning model (living wills and healthcare proxies) and consider some different approaches to thinking about and planning for mortality.
Objectives:
- Review common “disconnects” encountered in end-of-life planning
- Discuss the cultural and medical challenges associated with advanced age and dying
- Identify effective approaches to advance care planning
