This training equips clinicians to recognize, reflect upon, and ethically manage countertransference in their work. By applying the ACA Code of Ethics and understanding its significance in both individual and broader treatment contexts, counselors will be better prepared to provide professional, compassionate, and ethically sound care to their clients, as well as deliver quality supervision to aspiring professionals in training. The ultimate goal is to enhance the therapeutic and supervisory relationship, ensure client safety, and uphold standards of professional conduct.

Objectives:

• Discussion of ACA Code of Ethics (2014) I.1.b. “Ethical Decision Making”
• Exploration of how countertransference can manifest as both positive (e.g., over-identification with a client) and negative (e.g., frustration or resentment)
• A look at the impact of countertransference in different treatment settings and in supervisor-supervisee relationships

Jeremy Miller, LPC-MHSP-S

Ronn Huff (HEC-C) is the lead Clinical Ethics Consultant for the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). His work focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to clinical ethics, leveraging the work of physicians, nurses, case managers, chaplains, risk managers, patient safety directors and legal counsel, to identify opportunities for systems-based improvements in patient care.
