In this workshop, we will explore ethical and personal issues in regard to managing dual relationships in rural areas, when and how to limit them, and how to appropriately navigate them appropriately when unavoidable. Bring your own lunch and join as we discuss together about how we can take the best care of ourselves and our communities.

Objectives:

  • Following this presentation, participants will be able to define the components of and what constitutes a dual relationship.
  • Following this presentation, participants will be able to identify appropriate ethical considerations for dual relationships as stated in the ACA Code of Ethics (2014).
  • Following this presentation, participants will be able to know when and how to seek consultation regarding conflicting clinical relationships.
  • Following this presentation, participants will be able to assess when dual relationships may be appropriate and clinically beneficial.

About the Speakers

Benjamin Higgins, LPC-MHSP

Ben is a Counselor in the Tennessee Tech Counseling Center and has been practicing in the Upper Cumberland for the past 7 years.

Brittney Phillips, LPC-MHSP

Brittney Phillips, M.A., LPC-MHSP, NCC,is currently a doctoral candidate in the Counseling and Supervision Program at Tennessee Tech University. She has been a Licensed Professional Counselor with Mental Health Service Provider designation since 2017. She is also a National Certified Counselor through the National Board for Certified Counselors. She currently works as a Counselor at the Tennessee Tech University Counseling Center. She previously worked in an acute, dual-diagnosisinpatient faculty focused on providing treatment for individuals suffering from severe mental illness as well as detox and recovery for substance abuse disorders for two years. In 2019, she established a private clinical practice where she currently provides counseling for residents in the Upper Cumberland. Since October 2020, she has served as a regional representative in the Tennessee Licensed Professional Counseling Association for the Upper Cumberland region.
